Pickleball Comes to Town (and TCE!!!)

Until recently, the word "pickleball" might have drawn puzzled looks in most parts of India and certainly in Madurai. But not anymore!!!

In the past few weeks, this writer discovered that at least three locations in Madurai have introduced pickleball court.The most recent addition? A brand-new court at our college.

This morning, the campus witnessed the formal inauguration of a Pickleball Court at the Openair Auditorium The event was graced by Dr. (Capt.) Augustus Samuel Dodd, a former Medical Officer of the Indian Army, surgeon.The ceremony was presided over by Dr. L. Ashok kumar, Principal.

Couple of days ago, this writer stood near the court and captured a few snapshots of the freshly laid surface, one thing was clear: it looked clean and fantastic.

What is Pickleball?

Originating in the United States, pickleball is a rapidly growing paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It is played with a lightweight paddle and a perforated (mimicking small holes) plastic ball on a smaller court which resembles a concoction of a badminton and tennis court.

+++People of all ages can play, from students to professors.

+++ It’s low-impact, fun, and promotes social interaction.

+++It requires minimal equipment (a good racket would typically cost more than 10k) and less space than tennis or badminton.

THE FUTURE 

Pickleball, with its low barrier to entry and wide appeal, has the potential to reach the masses. All it needs is more awareness and more courts.

This writer is eagerly waiting to grab a paddle and finally step onto the court. This writer believes it is time more people get a taste of this fantastic game.
